This role requires an individual who exhibits high levels of capability and potential with a real enthusiasm and proven experience in driving and delivering high level of analytical output both as part of a team and as an individual. Someone with a detailed understanding of the UK energy industry and of strategy and planning techniques, excellent problem-solving, analytical and communication skills to interact at senior level and proven experience at successfully managing a team in a fast-moving professional environment. Individual will be accountable for defining scope and delivering work within one subject or functional area.

Desired profile

  • This managerial level post is empowered to take decisions in its main Key Accountability areas, under the overall guidance of the Director. When participating in the overall leadership of cross functional strategy or analysis projects and programmes, key decisions are to be taken in conjunction with other members of the Corporate Strategy team, the Business Units and EDF Group as appropriate;
  • Analyse and develop a vision for our future environment in the customer-facing markets: develop and maintain an excellent knowledge of, and ensure key stakeholders in Corporate and Business functions are aware of: the key drivers of the customer-facing UK electricity and gas markets and businesses and the ways in which they will/may be changed by such factors as, amongst others, regulatory or political reforms/change (incl also the trust challenge); technological change; developments in the competitive landscape (incl. also costs; other investment drivers); and the strategic implications of such change. Work consists both of ongoing areas of activity and of specific projects;
  • Provide Corporate strategy interface to Customers strategy, contributing to strategy development through challenge and support at corporate level and on specific topics, ensuring alignment with overall EDF Energy strategy;
  • Identify and analyse opportunities in existing or emerging customer-facing markets for existing or new market participants and business models; maintain a good understanding of our competitive landscape in Customer-facing markets;
  • Create, further develop and supervise key business and financial models and analytical tools; ensure capability is maintained within the team and provide continuous challenge to owners of models and tools for continuous improvement in data quality and methodology;
  • Communicate insight and positions effectively to senior stakeholders and working-level contacts across the company, and where appropriate in industry bodies, driving alignment on positions and shared understanding of key market factors;
  • Ensure own and team’s work is consistently of high quality and completed in a timely manner, often reacting within short timescales to queries from senior stakeholders. Produce well written, concise explanations and conclusions, supported by robust data and analysis where possible. Become a trusted point of reference for the Executive team;
  • Develop assumptions for use in EDF Energy’s strategic scenarios, provide analytical support to the scenario modelling process and interpret results and their impacts on EDF Energy’s strategy;
  • Identify and develop subject matter expertise in the team and guide team members towards building up their ability to tackle complex and demanding pieces of research and analysis;
  • Create a strong internal (EDF Group and EDF Energy) and external network of contacts able to contribute to, challenge and sense check work carried out;
  • Demonstrate flexibility in working in a team in which the activity is often project-based and involves a strong interaction with other teams both within Corporate and Steering Functions and Business Units. Develop and maintain knowledge of other areas of work with Corporate Strategy, understanding how these impact on own work and look for opportunities to contribute to these areas (including, for example, scenario analysis, competitor analysis and the Strategic Plan process);
  • Effectively and efficiently manage a team to drive high performance;
  • Support more junior colleagues in their development;
  • Develop the “Corporate Strategy way of working” to promote excellence, efficiency and continuous learning;
  • Be Safe and Healthy and promote this to others;
  • Promote the reputation of Corporate Strategy, Strategy & Corporate Affairs and EDF Energy;
  • Promote the values of our company and support the company in developing its agenda;
  • Likely to hold a degree in a numerate discipline such as economics, business studies, engineering or mathematics, or equivalent experience. An MBA would be an advantage;
  • Significant experience at a senior level within the field of strategy or other analytical function;
  • Excellent problem-solving and commercial, numerical and analytical (incl. modelling) skills, incl. ability to perform and complex, rigorous analysis, incl. also related data gathering. Ability to analyse complex business landscape, identify options and recommend excellent whilst pragmatic solutions with a strategic focus;
  • Excellent understanding of business value drivers, company financials, and strategy development and risk analysis approaches and techniques;
  • Wide and developed knowledge of the UK Energy sector, particularly in terms of market mechanisms, regulatory context and competition. This can be either through strong specialism or wide general experience of the energy value chain;
  • Positive, “can-do” attitude and ability to quickly grasp and tackle new topics;
  • High intellectual horsepower demonstrating high value add, and forward thinking approach. Ability to innovate, think laterally and highlight new areas of business risk and opportunity;
  • Good knowledge of EDF Group and broad knowledge of EDF Energy, its environment and ongoing challenges;
  • Strong presentation, influencing and facilitation skills, with ability to interact at senior levels in EDF Energy and EDF Group;
  • Strong ability in creating compelling written communication suitable for senior stakeholder use without significant editing. Ability to coach and train team to support this requirement;
  • Proven experience of successful work/project management including management of a team and resources. Ability to oversee multiple projects, and lead key projects;
  • Ability to shape projects and outputs and work collaboratively across the organisation, and to get things done where there is no direct control of the function/resources. Ability to act as "account manager" for a business unit;
  • Ability to drive and sense check high levels of analytical output to ensure it is credible and can be trusted “right first time”.;
  • Enthusiastic about working as part of a high calibre team, leading and supporting as appropriate, and building team across organisation;
  • Ability to manage tight timescales and to perform under time and stakeholder pressure;
  • Understanding of coaching techniques and ability to develop others within own team;
  • Supports and generates enthusiasm for our values and creates a climate of trust and openness. Role models company values;
  • Fluency in French would be an advantage.
