Senior Researcher – Building Energy and Energy in the Built Environment

Key Responsibilities

  • To provide vision and direction for the built environment research team at the IERC
  • To lead in the specification of research and analytical projects that can deliver transformative innovations into the built environment
  • To monitor, analyse and forecast developments in national and international research and innovations in the built environment
  • To collaborate with IERC member organisations, the energy industry and research performing organisations in the analysis of the innovation needs for the built environment sector
  • To lead in grant proposal writing for competitive funding streams
  • To interact closely with postgraduate research students who are studying for a Masters or a PhD and possibly have an agreed role in supporting these students in their day to day research in conjunction with an academic supervisor
  • To carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post

Criteria - Essential

  • A PhD in engineering, architecture or other relevant discipline
  • At least 8 years’ post PhD experience in energy systems and built environment research
  • Proven track record for research income generation of at least €1M
  • Evidence of close working with industry, and demonstrating an understanding of industry needs
  • Demonstrated experience in holistic energy system results, including non-technical issues

Criteria - Desirable

  • Experience of responding to government consultations
  • Highly self-motivated and able to demonstrate initiative
  • Professional experience leading and managing projects and working collaboratively with industry
  • Strong preference for a primary degree/masters in thermo-mechanical engineering
  • Evidence of esteem and standing in the energy research community (publications, invited talks, committee memberships etc.)
  • Excellent communication, organisation and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated capability of working within and leading a project team to achieve results
