Bangor University invites applications from highly talented and motivated candidates for the position of full-time, Senior Research Lecturer (temporary until 31 October 2022 in the first instance) working in the Ser Cymru supported Predictive Modelling group, which has been part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Welsh Government.
Candidates should be educated to postdoctoral standard or equivalent in Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Physics or a similar discipline of relevance to the nuclear industry and hold a PGCertHE teaching qualification or HEA Fellowship, or equivalent. Candidates will have will have a strong track record in international research, publications and relevant grant capture.
The successful candidate will be expected to commence as soon as practicable.
The team will deliver a BWR predictive modelling programme which would develop the infrastructure to deploy the latest numerical techniques to make full and optimal use of both the thermal hydraulic test facilities, and data from and associated with ABWRs. This combination of numerical tools and experimental/ABWR data, central to predictive modelling, is fundamental to gaining a deeper understanding of the operation of the reactors. Within the programme we are proposing to develop a predictive modelling framework that can improve the operation of a reactor by assimilating on-line sensor information to accurately model and to help optimize the operation of the reactor and to explore the translation of this capability to other technologies and fields.
Working collaboratively with other research organisations and industry will be central to this group which will deliver a predictive modelling programme which will develop the infrastructure to deploy the latest numerical techniques to make full and optimal use of thermal hydraulic test facilities, and data from and associated with ABWRs.
This technology could also help develop RBWRs, Gen. IV, SMRs, and new medical isotope reactors, using cutting-edge science and design methods.

The Senior Research Lecturer will conduct world leading and internationally significant research in predictive modelling for application in the nuclear sciences and with substantial evidence of quality and international peer recognition.
Predictive Modelling will be instrumental in leading the establishment of the University’s capacities in nuclear sciences as set out in the aspiration above. The appointee will contribute to an internationally excellent research group in the predictive modelling disciplines, focussed initially on the nuclear sector but identifying and pursuing opportunities to diversify. The appointee will contribute to the long term sustainability of the Predictive Modelling capacity and capability at Bangor University. The position is funded by the Welsh Government and the European Regional Development Fund under a proposal submitted to the Welsh Government by Bangor University and will deliver against the relevant aspects of that proposal for the initial duration of the post.
The appointee will also contribute, under the direction of the Ser Cymru Chair in Predictive Modelling and Nuclear Engineering and the University’s senior management team, to regional development opportunities associated with the establishment of new nuclear capacity and will establish Bangor as a significant organisation in the development of predictive modelling expertise with its strategic partners in industry and governmental organisations locally, nationally and internationally.
The appointee will contribute to the development and delivery of teaching of undergraduate, postgraduate and professional programmes relevant to the research activity. This aspect of the position is developmental and the development of teaching responsibilities will be key to the sustainability of the research group at the University.
