Role synopsis

The Market Analysis team is primarily responsible for providing analysis of European Gas & Power and Global LNG markets to the trading and origination teams within the International Gas (IG) business and the wider IST organization. Analysis performed by the team provides commercial value by keeping traders, originators, and management informed of underlying fundamental views that affect the markets.

The role involves leading the European Gas Analytics team, driving thought leadership, developing quantitative models (fundamental and/or econometric), analyzing large quantities of data to identify the key drivers for prices at the key European hubs and help shape the commercial agenda.

Key accountabilities

  • Seeking and delivering continuous improvement and innovation in analytical approaches and methodologies to aid in the understanding of complex market dynamics in real time trading environment;
  • Providing clear market analysis and trading strategies to the Gas desk including a clear understanding of risks;
  • Working in collaboration with European power and LNG teams to ensure consistent and robust outlook across the benches;
  • Liaising with other teams within Trading Analytics e.g. Data strategists to ensure best tools are being deployed;
  • Line management of European Gas analyst and graduate on rotation including performance management and development;
  • Presenting short term fundamental views in weekly fundamentals meeting, as well as daily with traders;
  • Providing ad hoc support the trading team, origination team and the wider BP group.

Essential Education

  • Degree or equivalent experience in quantitative, statistical, mathematical, engineering or similar discipline.

Essential experience and job requirements

  • Detailed knowledge of European gas markets and fundamental drivers;
  • Highly proficient in Excel and VBA, (Python desirable);
  • Independent thinker; creative in finding alternative solutions;
  • Demonstrable history of continually improving technical processes, models and systems by drawing on multiple methodologies and wide networks to solve problems;
  • Commercial focus and applications of modelling to markets;
  • Confident at presenting in front of a diverse audience;
  • Highly-developed attention to detail;
  • Can-do approach to delivering results; able to deal with conflict and field critical questioning;
  • Excellent IT and data analysis skills;
  • Experience of line management and development of analytical capability;
  • Experience in quantitative modelling skills including working with large and incomplete data;
  • Ability and desire to work in a fast-paced, dynamic trading environment;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable criteria and qualifications

  • Understanding of statistics, data science techniques and modelling is highly regarded;
  • Knowledgeable about other energy commodity markets, such as emissions, coal and power.
