We are looking for a Senior Power Trading Analyst to support the R+D team to develop and improve models and provide analysis for energy trading. You will work in an innovative, fast paced and complex environment at the intersection between Trading, Data Analytics and IT.

The Senior Power Trading Analyst is going to report to the Head of R+D and will act as a knowledge center for the R+D team and the wider company. Analysis requests will come mostly from traders and occasionally also from Origination, Business Development, Innovation etc.

Depending on the success and internal acceptance of provided models and analysis, the Senior Analyst will take responsibility for larger projects and might manage junior team members.

What you will do

The ideal candidate will take responsibility for the co-ordination between power trading and the R+D team and will manage resources and delivery of the related work:

  • Develop new and challenge/improve existing power trading strategies to create business results;
  • Provide, calibrate, back-test and operate models and analysis tools for our traders, analysts, researchers, and meteorologists. Discuss and improve forecasts in co-operation with the commercial stakeholders;
  • Model power demand and renewable power production for NW-European power day-ahead markets in collaboration with the Meteo team;
  • Model availability and cost structure of conventional power generation for NW-European power markets in collaboration with team colleagues and Data Analytics team;
  • Improve, calibrate and run an interconnected stack model for NW-European power day-ahead and intraday markets;
  • Adjust historical bid and offer curves of NW-European power day-ahead and intraday markets for changing of fundamentals in order to make price forecasts;
  • Develop analysis for US power markets as the company extends.

Next to this the role also includes:

  • Manage and develop a junior analyst;
  • Defining and maintaining analysis and documentation standards for the R+D team;
  • Contribute to R+D team management, work planning and to strategic company projects;
  • Design and customize training for the R+D team and other interested colleagues as part of “Priogen Academy”.

Who you are

  • MSc, in a quantitative field - e.g. Energy Economics, Econometrics, Operations Research, Engineering, Computer Science, etc.;
  • 4+ years of experience in an energy trading environment;
  • Knowledge of power and gas forward, spot, imbalance and ancillary service market design;
  • Proficient with an advanced programming language (preferred language is Python), SQL type database communication;
  • Mathematical optimization knowledge, e.g. ILOG CPLEX, Gurobi, Google OR-Tools, GAMS, etc. is an advantage;
  • Close interaction with traders and can provide actionable advise given incomplete or vague information. Not afraid to challenge or to be challenged, also under time pressure;
  • Ability to prioritize and co-ordinate work in order to:
    • provide early insights;
    • guide the development process;
    • allow for quality checks of critical analysis and process components.
  • Comfortable with a stepwise development and improvement process using partial solutions and managing around existing limitations; independent thinker considering the pros and cons of alternative approaches;
  • Team player, contributing to a co-operative work environment and fostering team and company development.
