Job Profile Summary

The Engineering Functional Learning Director (FLD) manages the capability development agenda for BP Upstream Engineering. This includes partnering with HR Business partners to define, communicate and implement to the long-term health of Engineering capability, including learning development and delivery. In addition, the Engineering FLD supports BP Group Engineering learning and development needs.

This position also has a very important role in setting the strategy and pushing sustainable implementation of simulation technology, including Multi-purpose Dynamic Simulators (MPDS, aka Operator Training Simulators or OTS), which have a large engineering content. These simulators have been shown to have enormous benefits for both developing and accessing staff capability along with improving designs of plants - with additional future potential benefits on remote plant operations support.

Key accountabilities

  • Partner with the Engineering HR VP or delegates to support and facilitate to the development/revision of the long-term Engineering Capability Strategy integrating business needs, and HR processes (including the Strategic Learning Plan for Engineering);
  • Recommend the skills, behaviour, experiences, certification, competencies for engineering, and describe what good career development looks like, with appropriate supporting process tools, working closely with the Discipline, Functional and Regional VPs;
  • Member of the Upstream Engineering (UE) leadership team, the Upstream Engineering Centre (UEC) leadership team and facilitator of the Global Engineering Learning Forum (GELF). Guest, on demand, to the Upstream Engineering Advisory Group (EAG) and the BP Group Heads of Engineering (HoE) meeting;
  • Responsible for the MPDS/OTS and sustainable use in the Upstream Learning Centre, ULC (facilitate for other locations). Inputs into the MPDS/OTS strategy, chairs the Upstream MPDS strategy meeting, monitors the dashboards for MPDS use and maintenance and encourages such use and improvements plus benefits capture;
  • Identify and deploy new approaches to enhance learning through the MPDS/OTS including for engineering studies and digital twin usage. Inputs and pilots into extension of simulation into field technician and team training areas using e.g. 3D VR simulation (connected to MPDS/OTS);
  • Ensure access to learning in a timely, quality manner using appropriate, and accessible technology, especially to allow for quality virtual delivery. Lead the Learning team;
  • Equip and support line managers in discharging their Leadership Expectation of “developing future capability”, through a balanced leadership offer drawing on BP resources;
  • Ensure effective communication of learning and development expectations, tools, and resources to all levels of the engineering discipline across the BP Group. Also connecting to other members of BPU and HR;
  • Develop a Strategic Learning Plan for engineering to ensure that appropriate development and delivery of all types of learning to meet the capability needs of the engineering discipline and the operating functions (operations, projects, engineering centres and upstream/downstream technology).

Essential Education

  • Engineering Bachelor’s degree or UK degree equivalent (e.g. a Masters in Engineering).

Essential experience and job requirements

  • Team leader experience;
  • Extensive Engineering experience in the oil and gas industry and specific understanding of working in multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Knowledge of current engineering work processes and ways of working;
  • Passion for people, capability development and learning;
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and influencing skills;
  • Experience managing multiple interfaces;
  • Experience executing change;
  • Ability to identify the capability development needs in engineering and provide the appropriate solutions;
  • Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer.

Desirable criteria and qualifications

  • Experience of Upstream and Downstream Segments;
  • Technology awareness and ability to support the digital agenda;
  • Good understanding of process engineering, control & automation engineering (for simulators) and other engineering sub-disciplines.
